Prepaid programs can be divided into 3 general groups:
1.) Open-loop Program
- cards are accepted and processed at any merchant location that accepts the payment method
2.) Close-loop Program
- cards' acceptance is limited to specific locations
- e.g. gift cards introduced by merchants
3.) Hybrid Program
- limited requirements with a wider range of merchants
- e.g. acceptance of the payment card within a mall/school/group of companies
